During our recent visit to Key Largo, FL, our mission to go diving was spoiled as hurricanes in the Atlantic gave birth to rough seas on the local reefs. We decided to not waste the sunny and very windy day, so we headed to Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo, FL to go snorkeling. Upon arrival we noticed the park had canoe and kayak rentals available. Neither of us have kayaked befores so decided to give it a go.
After paying the rental fee we went to the pickup area and was greeted by a very friendly young man. The kayaks were both “Sit On Top” Perception Tribe’s, one 9.5′ and the other 11.5′. After receiving a quick set of instructions of where to and not to go, we were on our way.
Despite a strong steady wind, the water remained calm, sheilded by the surrounding mangroves. The salty clear water trails twisted through the mangroves leading to the Atlantic Ocean which we avoided due to large boat traffic. We encountered a few birds and a smattering of small fish along the way. The kayak attendant told us that a manatee had been hanging around early in the morning, but we did not see it. The approximate 90 minute excursion was relaxing and enjoyable dispite being brief due to the limited area to cover.
